5 Things You Can Do Today to Crush 2018 (Savings Challenge)

Happy New Year! Are you ready to crush 2018? Something that I focus on each year is to do the little things each day and week that will lead up to a big accomplishment at the end.

For blogging, my non-negotiable is one social media post each day (Mon-Fri), one blog post each week, and 100% response rate to any contact. I know that if I can do these 3 small things then I will be able to reach my goal which is to help people take control of their finances to create the life they want to live not the life they have to live.

5 Things You Can Do Today to Crush 2018:

(If you can stick to these I promise this will be your best year yet!)

1.Stop the Consumer debt

First and most important, stay away from consumer debt! Stop financing everything and being stuck to the rat race (Going to work to get a check to pay your bills), this is not what life is about. If you have consumer debt, it is time to address it and establish a plan to get rid of it.

Consumer debt includes car payments, credit card debt, and anything you are financing (except mortgage).

2.Control Your Spending

If you don’t live on a budget yet….you are missing out. A budget allows you to spend without guilt and take control of each dollar you have to make sure you are reaching your goals. People say all the time they want to save money, however they never come up with a plan to save money each month, they just hope it will work out. They do the exact same thing with paying off debt, no plan and pray it works out. Here is a free plan for paying off debt.

3.Get educated

Invest in yourself! I am so proud of my Mom, she is currently in her last semester to earn her Associates Degree. 🙂 It is not about a degree or a piece of paper, but instead about being a lifelong learner.

What I have found is that we graduate school and then we go off to work and somehow we say we are done learning…wrong.

How many books did you read last year? Do you listen to podcasts or take any courses? Maybe you take a class on something you are interested in?

Over the next 12 months I promise if you make an effort to get educated in something new or even just read one book about a person who has done what you want to do you will move yourself in the right direction. Here are 5 books that will change your life.

4.Invest

Getting educated is investing in yourself; however learning to invest and investing are two different things. If you are not contributing to a retirement account, start right now. I wrote a post called the One Step Millionaire Life Hack, it explains exactly what to do to become a millionaire through long term retirement savings.

There are others ways to invest as well. You could invest in starting a business, a side hustle about something you are passionate about, stocks, or even real estate. Remember, get educated and start investing for your future.

5.Set a goal

Don’t just set a generic goal that you won’t stick to. What do you really want in 2018? What would you do anything to achieve? Figure out what your goal is and come up with a plan to achieve it. If you want to save $1200 in 2018, then setup a budget and set aside $100 per month for savings.

If you want to lose 12 pounds in 2018 come up with a weekly plan to lose 1 pound per month. Each day when you wake up tell yourself what your goal is for that day, week, month, and year.

One strategy to stick with your goal is set up one repetitive task you will do each day that will get you closer to your goal. If you want it bad enough you will find a way, if not you will find an excuse. I ask myself each day, “What am I doing today to get closer to my dreams?” It could be as simple as executing my eating out budget or listening to a podcast.
